About Dubai

Dubai is the second largest Emirate in the United Arab Emirates and probably the most well known. It is arguably the emerging city of the modern world. Situated in the UAE, Dubai is not only the region's flourishing commercial centre, but is also an undisputed magnet for tourists and those seeking a luxurious and prosperous lifestyle. Aware that the oil reserves will not last forever Dubai has set about realising their vision to make Dubai the largest tourist and financial centre in the world. Under the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid bin Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of UAE, it has forged a reputation as one of the most important and vibrant cities in the Middle East.

The modern emirate of Dubai was created with the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. However, written accounts documenting the existence of the city have existed at least 150 years prior to the formation of the UAE. Dubai shares legal, political, military and economic functions with the other emirates within a federal framework, although each emirate has jurisdiction over some functions such as civic law enforcement and provision and upkeep of local facilities. Dubai has the largest population and is the second largest emirate by area, after Abu Dhabi. As of 2007, 800 new residents are said to be setting up home in Dubai every day. The city has earned many sobriquets including ‘City of Gold’, ‘Middle Eastern City of the Future’ etc. Dubai is home to the award winning Emirates Airlines.
